"Pen Pals" wanted!

Becca Gollehon would welcome "pen pals" as she recovers from severe complications of the H1N1 flu. Many of you may know Becca from Camp Na-bor-lee or her Mom, Ronda, who works part time in the Davenport WSU Extension office. Becca spent almost a month in the hospital and will continue recuperating at home this winter. She enjoys texting and the farm game on Facebook, volleyball ( very bummed to miss this season) softball, reading ( Twilight stuff) and all kinds of craft projects. If interested in "visiting" with Becca - contact me at the Extension Office (659-3209) or email Karen. I'll provide legitimate requesters with Becca's email or contact info.

WA State 4-H Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Lincoln County's
Jill Schwartz

Jill Schwartz received the WA State 4-H Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award at the WA State 4-H Leaders Forum in Grand Mound on October 17, 2009.  Jill, of Reardan, was recognized for her longtime involvement in 4-H, first as a member in Snohomish County and more recently as a leader in Lincoln County 4-H, as well as serving on the WA State 4-H Fair Board for seven years.  She has served as beef leader in the Reardan Livestock Club, the county leader for Know Your Government for eleven years, a member and officer of Lincoln County Leaders Council, a chaperone and fundraiser for the county-wide exchange club as well as a resource leader for judging and other educational clinics.  Jill 's leadership, efforts and encouragement to members and other leaders has helped make the Lincoln County 4-H program better...living out the 4-H motto.  Her nomination will now represent WA State as a national candidate.  Husband Stan and their three daughters Tessa, Trish & Marci traveled across the state to surpirise her with their attendance at the Recognition Banquet where she received her award.

Outstanding Volunteer Award

Congratulations to Faye King!

The Lincoln County Leaders' Council recognizes Faye King, of the Odessa Junior Livestock 4-H Club, as the 2009 Outstanding Leader for Lincoln County!  Faye has been a certified 4-H Leader for 8 years, but making a difference in the lives of our youth for many more.  Faye was selected as this year’s Outstanding Leader based on numerous nominations from 4-H members, parents, and other county leaders who recognize her hard work and contribution to the 4-H program.

Faye was recognized on October 17, 2009 during the State 4-H Forum, but as she couldn't be there in person, she was honored at a special 4-H meeting in Odessa on October 20th.
Thanks to Terry Connolly for news & photo submission.

Rhonda W. was the first of 26 volunteers to return her 4-H Volunteer Agreement for the new 4-H year as of 10/22/09.

REMINDER: Volunteers serving in CLUBS must get signatures on their Volunteer Agreement Form of the Group leader for roles within specific clubs. Ideally, this will happen during a discussion of educational and activity plans for the club in the upcoming year!

New WA State 4-H
Volunteer Hours Reporting

The Volunteer Hours Reporting System is a new database for
4-H volunteers to record their volunteer hours. Because enrolled 4-H volunteers are eligible for L&I coverage, Washington State Department of Labor & Industries is requiring WSU to ensure volunteers are indeed working on behalf of the University.

Reporting your volunteer hours via a new on-line portal will make you eligible for L & I coverage for any potential injuries you might sustain in your role as a 4-H volunteer. The total number of reported hours for each county will be made available to State and local 4-H programs to use in grant applications and information to legislators about the value of 4-H volunteer commitment.

If you are an enrolled Lincoln-Adams 4-H Volunteer, you will recieve your Hours Reporting user name and password soon. If you have questions or do not receive, contact Karen Robertson or call 659-3209 for alternative reporting option if you don't have web access.

HEALTH

H1N1 Flu

We should all take precautions to protect ourselves and others from the flu caused by the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus. There are several resources available through WSU and other sources.  Links to these resources are provided below.  Additionally, there are steps that we all should take to minimize the potential for transmission.

  1. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
  2. Use hand sanitizer when hand washing is not possible.
  3. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available)
  4. Stay home if you feel sick.
  5. If you have a fever, stay home for at least 24 hrs after that fever has ended.
  6. Get vaccinated for the flu virus. Even though there is not currently a vaccine available for the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus, experts indicate that the seasonal flu may provide a degree of protection.  Hopefully, an H1N1 vaccine will be available in the near future.
