Free guide to educating children through birds and nature
Here’s news of interest to anyone who cares about helping children learn and getting them connected to the natural world. Project FeederWatch engages children in the excitement of nature study and the wonder of scientific investigation by
- encouraging careful observation and note-taking
- stimulating children to ask questions about the natural world
- fostering independent study
- providing opportunities for meaningful Internet use and exploration
"Project FeederWatch” converts casual bird observation into
disciplined science and can be an integral part of science
curriculum.
Designed for home school use, many groups such as 4-H
groups use FeederWatch as part of their programming.

The Secret Life of Bees: 4-H Connection
11/4/08 Pat BoyEs
Did you know that the
National 4-H Council partnered with Fox Searchlight Pictures' feature film, "The
Secret Life of Bees" to support
4-H's Science, Engineering and Technology communication efforts? This fabulous
film is based on the novel by author Sue Monk Kidd, a 4-H alumna who credits
her 4-H club experience in entomology and reading as a positive force in
her life and career: "Wouldn't you know -- my history with 4-H has
to do with books and bugs. So perhaps it is not completely surprising that
I grew up not only to read books, but write them, and that one of those
books was about the secret life of the Apis Mellifera."
You can find out more about the film, read Ms. Kidd's full story, follow
her on a special backstage tour, and view special souvenirs by visiting www.4-H.org. "The
Secret Life of Bees" was released on October 17 to great reviews
and is in theaters everywhere now.
Adams Co. 4-H Achievement Program
This years achievement program will be November 9th at 2:00 at the Lind Elementary Gym.
The year pins are available for Club Group Leaders or designee's to pick up. The Journal will once again be invited, so please check with your club members to ensure that there are not any issues about their pictures being published in the paper.
There will be a spot in the program again this year for members to share their achievements. Remember that you don’t have to win the big ribbon, or get top honors to share. This is a great opportunity for members to share what they learned or what they had fun doing…… Please encourage your members to share something….it is great experience for them.
If you know a 4-H supporter who should be invited as a "special guest," please let me know.
Mark you calendars, the 9th should be a fun day!

Calling All Talented 4-H’ers!
Submitted by Pat BoyEsThe National Association of County Agricultural Agents is hosting their annual meeting in Portland Oregon in 2009. The 4-H Esprit de Corp committee is heading up their 4-H Talent Program for Monday night at their dinner. This is 4-H’s opportunity to showcase their talented performers. There is money to cover travel and housing expenses. If we could have demo tapes, VT or CD/DVD’s by November 15, 2008 we could review them in December and then by January 1st have information out to the kids and their families. If you need more information please feel free to call or email, if not we appreciate your willingness to assist with this project and in getting the word out.

Tips: Do
you have trouble receiving or sending some emails?
Your Internet
Service Provider (ISP) may have a "filter" on your email "subject" lines.
Depending on your ISP - blocking words might be "Free", "funding", "markets", "insurance", "scholarship" and MORE! Some anit-spam programs block long subject lines or subject lines with characters like !, #, $, % etc. So far, the word "4-H" is OK and does not cause blocking.
Another cause for blocked emails can be messages that contain several web links or email addresses - typical of some "signature boxes" from businesses and organizations such as WSU!
If you find out that you are not receiving specific emails, check with your ISP to find out how to add "trusted senders" to your account. Add email addresses for newsgroups, list-serves or people (such as l-a4h@lyris.cahnrs.wsu.edu or l-ahorse4h@lyris.cahnrs.wsu.edu or robertk@wsu.edu ) to your trusted sender list.
You also may have your own anti-spam program or firewall set up on your computer. This is another potential source of blocked emails. Check for a mechanism in your anti-spam program to add "trusted senders", "blocked senders" (those you don't want to hear from anymore), etc.
