Note: This is FUN!!! If you have fast internet - try it out!!

11/3/09 - Pat BoyEs

With winter settling in around us now is the time to plan a bit of armchair travel for your 4-H members. How good is your understanding of international diversity?

Click on Dining Out In The World then select your answer by clicking on the twirling utensil. It will give you the correct answer, and then move to the next country.

"Pen Pals" wanted!

Becca Gollehon would welcome "pen pals" as she recovers from severe complications of the H1N1 flu. Many of you may know Becca from Camp Na-bor-lee or her Mom, Ronda, who works part time in the Davenport WSU Extension office. Becca spent almost a month in the hospital and will continue recuperating at home this winter. She enjoys texting and the farm game on Facebook, volleyball ( very bummed to miss this season) softball, reading ( Twilight stuff) and all kinds of craft projects. If interested in "visiting" with Becca - contact me at the Extension Office (659-3209) or email Karen. I'll provide legitimate requesters with Becca's email or contact info.

New WA State 4-H
Volunteer Hours Reporting

Because enrolled 4-H volunteers are eligible for L&I coverage, Washington State Department of Labor & Industries is requiring WSU to ensure that volunteers are indeed working on behalf of the University.

Reporting your volunteer hours will make you eligible for L & I coverage for any potential injuries you might sustain in your role as a 4-H volunteer. Additionally, The total number of reported hours for each county will be made available to State and local
4-H programs to use in grant applications and information to legislators about the value of 4-H volunteer commitment.

The Volunteer Hours Reporting System is a new on-line database and the preferred method for 4-H volunteers to record their 4-H volunteer hours. However - we understand that many in the Lincoln-Adams area do not have access to high-speed internet.

If you are an enrolled Lincoln-Adams 4-H Volunteer, you will receive your Hours Reporting user name and password soon along with information on alternative reporting and "opt-out" options. Below are some DRAFTS related to this process.

Draft: 4-H Volunteer Hours Reporting Worksheet (Excel)    (PDF)
If you have suggestions for this worksheet - let us know!
(Also let us know if if does not format properly for your version of Excel or PDF reader)

LIVESTOCK

Show Pig Sale*
11/17/09 - Jennie Wagner
Hi, we are doing things a bit different this year at Wagner Show Pigs.  We will be holding an auction on Dec. 20th, hog preview at 11, complimentary lunch at noon and sale at 1pm.  There will be several floor prices, so there should be something for everyone's budger.  Part of our reasoning behind this is to give everyone a chance at the "best" hogs, as well as get rid of our inventory in one day.

Click HERE for Flyer or email Ian Wagner at ianwagat symbol hotmail.com for more information.

Heifer and Club Calf Sale in Othello*
On Friday, November 27th there will be 20 open heifers, 55 bred heifers, and 45 halter broke steers for sale in Othello.

There will be nice club calves ranging from 500-900 lbs for spring or fall shows.  They are all halter broke, clipped, and sorted for disposition.  Most of the work is done by the Schmidt kids.

The bred heifers will be Black Angus, Shorthorn, and Durham Reds.  There are some show prospects, not halter broke - but bad dispositions are already at the feedlot, in the open heifers.

On-line Training for 4-H Livestock Projects

Check out the training modules for 4-H Livestock Volunteers. There is a NEW Quality Assurance Module! It introduces the subject of quality assurance and why it is important for youth to meet quality assurance standards while raising 4-H livestock. Youth who raise livestock take on a producer role in the food supply continuum which includes the responsibility of providing safe and wholesome products for consumers. This module is a great way to learn about quality assurance while motivating leaders to equip youth livestock producers!

The Disease Prevention Module covers bio-security practices and how they can be used to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading diseases while raising 4-H livestock. It is a great way to learn disease prevention while providing you with inspiration and teaching ideas so you can bring these concepts to youth in your county! If you have no or slow internet access, this module is also on a DVD that Lincoln-Adams volunteers can check out by contacting Karen or call 659-3209 or 725-4171.

SET
(Science, Engineering & Technology)

4-H'ers in Spokane Participate in SET

A group of Spokane 4-H’ers and members from seven other cities across the US are piloting a new 4-H Science Engineering & Technology (SET) program. 4-H youth, county 4-H agents and community partners are participating in  A Digital Storytelling Project, a new science program in urban communities that will allow 4-H youth to create short films exploring science in the world around them. One team of 4-H youth from each city will film examples of science, engineering and technology in their communities, and enter them into a national contest.

“We believe that filmmaking will be a powerful way for youth to express what they have learned about key issues and what they believe can be done at community and personal levels,” said Chad Ripberger, Project Director of 4-H SET in Urban Communities.
At the kick-off event held at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center, youth discussed numerous public issues including water quality, industrial pollution, urban forestry and wildlife habitat, and renewable energy sources and technologies.

The teams will identify and research the science involved in issues in their community, document it through film, and deliver presentations to local leaders and decision makers. Local 4-H programs will screen the films and select the top three to enter a national 4-H science film contest. Youth will use new resources available on the 4-H Filmmaking Workshop and Studio Web site.
