Lincoln Co. 4-H Leaders' Council

12/5/08 Dawn Nelson
Hi-lights from Dec. 4th Leaders' Council meeting:

We are getting allot of concerns regarding the Round Robin since fair time. So Leaders' Council has decided to get a committee together to research this issue.

Question: Does the Round Robin at the Lincoln County Fair need to be changed? If so how? Please respond to Dawn or attend the next Leaders' Council Meeting.

Leaders Council has also elected Dawn Nelson as the new Council President. That leaves the Vice President position open. We also have a Exec. Board teen rep position open. We would like to fill both positions at the next Lincoln Co. 4-H Leaders' Council meeting on February 5th 2009 at 6:30pm Almira 4-H to host.  Location TBD.

Malignant Catarrhal Fever

Tom Platt
Dr. Dale Moore, WSU’s Director of Veterinary Extension, recently summarized the Malignant Catarrhal Fever outbreak that stemmed from last fall’s State Fair in Puyallup.

Twenty-one cattle were infected with the sheep associated herpes virus, Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF), and it appears that the infection spread from sheep to cattle at the Fair.  MCF is not transmitted  between cattle. Nineteen of the cattle subsequently died, and the other two are recovering.  It is known that infected lambs 6-9 months old actively shed the virus.  The virus does not make sheep sick. MORE

Carcass Data

Tom Platt
I have tabulated the steer carcass data from the 2008 fall fairs.  I am only able to collect carcass data from steer carcasses hung as halves, because the ribeye measurement is distorted in those hung as quarters.  Basically, this means I only collect carcass data from steers butchered at the Meat Block in Ritzville or at one of the federally inspected plants like Verns in Moses Lake.More Information
