Choking Game -
Educating Young People about the
Dangers
5/20/08 Pat BoyEs
We have received requests from 4-H youth development professionals for
information on the “Choking Game.” Few adults know about
this widespread activity and they need to be able to recognize signs and
take action to prevent such high risk behavior. Click
HERE for MORE including
resources that explain the dangers and potential horrible outcomes
associated with this activity.

Chevron 4-H Community Pride Grant
Applications Due June 1st
Chevron 4-H Community Pride Grants are available in amounts up to $300 (although larger amounts can be awarded on special request) to supplement local funds for projects. The following guidelines will be used in ranking proposals:
- needs and interests of community, and relationship to objectives or purposes of grants;
- leadership development and participant involvement in group educational activities;
- broad community support (can be evidenced by matching funds) and broad community benefit;
- networking with others and active participation from a variety of groups or organizations; and,
- provision of visibility of grant program activity through media (newspaper, public appearances, radio and TV) including donor acknowledgement.
Another Grant Opportunity
The goal of this granting opportunity is to fund worthy 4-H youth development programs or projects. The emphasis will be on short-term needs such as new innovative programs, seed money, emergency or unanticipated shortfalls. Suggestions for such programs could be focused on (but not limited to): education of youth and adults, expanding 4-H experiential learning to youth and adults, and promoting diversity.

What a busy spring!! We just got back form the Lamboree at Goldendale. They
expanded it this year to include cooking with lamb, Fiber Arts, a commercial
track and their traditional show lamb track. Needle felting was the
kids’ favorite activity. They plan to enter their projects
in the fair. I hope you are all thinking about what you can enter
in the fair.
The Jr. Show of Spokane was a lot of fun this year, with excellent projects. I do wish that it didn’t have to be 5 days long. It was hard to get my girls back to school Monday. We also attended the St. John spring fair with sheep, goats and horses. It was the first year that the fair had goats present and the 4-H horse show was one of the largest they have had recently.
Please look at our 4-H calendar on the web. Karen Robertson has been doing a wonderful job of keeping this updated with events and many interesting and informative links. Please feel free to send her information on upcoming events that are of interest to you so she can keep the calendar up to date. Remember to send web site links and please include: who, what, where & when and contact information when you submit information.
I hope your plans for this summer include 4-H activities like our summer sizzler horse show, Reardan’s poultry clinic, Camp Na-Bor-Lee or the Lincoln County Fair. This fall keep Leader’s Forum at Everett in mind and the NE District Teen Rally at the Bar-41 Ranch in Wilbur.
