Washington State Department of Health is seeking a few volunteers to conduct mosquito trapping for species identification and WNV surveillance.
Volunteers would trap twice a month, June through September, every other week. DOH would provide equipment, dry ice, and training for volunteers and would set the trapping up so that collected mosquitoes could be shipped to DOH on its FedEx account.
This would make a great summer project for 4-H’ers
(Jr. High age & up),
Master Gardeners, or other curious and interested people. Tom Platt also
has some curriculum that could be used with the project. For more information,
contact Tom Platt or Jo Marie Brauner at DOH.

H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has up-to-date information on the H1N1 Flu - a.k.a. "Swine Flu." Or visit the WSU web page on the H1N1 Flu.
There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
- If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Swine Influenza Concerns for Swine Producers and 4-H/FFA Swine Projects
The spread of the “Swine Flu” or Swine Influenza
Virus H1N1 in Mexico, the U.S. and around the world has naturally created
increased concern for individuals involved with swine production. Even
though the name indicates a connection to swine, the spread of this illness
has not been linked to contact with pigs.

Training Module for 4-H Livestock Projects
Check out the new training module for 4-H Livestock Volunteers. Fair managers & superintendents will also find this information useful! This training covers bio-security practices and how they can be used to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading diseases while raising 4-H livestock. It is a great way to learn disease prevention while providing you with inspiration and teaching ideas so you can bring these concepts to youth in your county!
The training is delivered on-line at http://vetextension.wsu.edu/programs/4-H/index.htm
(preferred method).
For those with no or slow internet access, a DVD
of the training is available from the Extension Office. Lincoln-Adams
volunteers can contact Karen or
call 659-3209 to check out a DVD or make an appointment to view at the
Extension Office.
