New WA State 4-H
Volunteer Hours Reporting

The Volunteer Hours Reporting System is a new database for
4-H volunteers to record their volunteer hours. Because enrolled 4-H volunteers are eligible for L&I coverage, Washington State Department of Labor & Industries is requiring WSU to ensure volunteers are indeed working on behalf of the University.

Reporting your volunteer hours on the new data base will make you eligible for coverage for any potential injuries you might sustain in your role as a 4-H volunteer. The number of reported hours will be made available to State and local 4-H programs to use in grant applications and information to legislators about the value of 4-H volunteer commitment. Details coming in October on how to log-on.

More information on New 4-H Year Enrollment
coming soon!
If you have questions: e-mail Karen Robertson or call 659-3209.

HEALTH

H1N1 Flu

We should all take precautions to protect ourselves and others from the flu caused by the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus. There are several resources available through WSU and other sources.  Links to these resources are provided below.  Additionally, there are steps that we all should take to minimize the potential for transmission.

  1. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
  2. Use hand sanitizer when hand washing is not possible.
  3. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available)
  4. Stay home if you feel sick.
  5. If you have a fever, stay home for at least 24 hrs after that fever has ended.
  6. Get vaccinated for the flu virus. Even though there is not currently a vaccine available for the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus, experts indicate that the seasonal flu may provide a degree of protection.  Hopefully, an H1N1 vaccine will be available in the near future.

Disease Prevention in 4-H Livestock Projects

Remember to check out the training module for 4-H Livestock Volunteers. This training covers bio-security practices and how they can be used to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading diseases while raising 4-H livestock. It is a great way to learn disease prevention while providing you with inspiration and teaching ideas so you can bring these concepts to youth in your county!

The training is delivered on-line at http://tiny.cc/VAzxW

Lincoln Co. 4-H Horse Program Meeting

9/24/09 - Robin Nachtigal
Hello Everyone!
Our next Horse Leaders Council meeting is at 7:00, October 5th at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.
It’s the beginning of a new year and we’d like to make this one the best! We will be electing new officers and voting on rule proposals.
We typically don't meet in November, December or January so if in the next meeting we could get Summer Sizzler and clinic dates figured out we will be much ahead in the planning of next year. The sooner we decide on dates the easier it is to get a judge. Bring your calendars!!

Please remember this meeting is open to all 4H Leaders, Family 4H, teens and parents Come and let us know what you’d like to see the Lincoln County 4H Horse Program do for you and your members! We’d like all ideas and suggestions.
If you have any questions about the horse council or horse program…feel free to contact me! This is your council…Hope to see you there!

SET
(Science, Engineering & Technology)

2009 National Science Experiment

For the second annual 4-H National Youth Science Day, the University of Wisconsin has designed “Biofuel Blast,” the 4-H National Science Experiment which will introduce young people all around the nation to biofuels.  Youth will become a scientist for the day, discovering how ordinary household products can create alternative energy, and how that fuel can power many of the things we use each day. Find out more.

2010 Spirit of Innovation Awards

The Conrad Foundation, a non-profit science-education and entrepreneurship advocacy organization, announced open registration for the 2010 Spirit of Innovation Awards. This competition challenges teams of high school students to create innovative products in four categories: aerospace exploration, space nutrition, renewable energy and green schools. Competing students will be guided through a phased pathway incorporating science, technology, design, marketing and business in an interdisciplinary, project-based product development experience. Teams will be provided the opportunity to meet with and learn from professional scientists and entrepreneurs who will advise them on how to commercialize their products for general market use. Awards are provided to the schools, teachers, and students for the top product designs. Teams and their coaches will compete for more than $100,000 in prize money, opportunities to present their products to world level leaders in business and industry, an opportunity to become a Pete Conrad Scholar, and other opportunities. Email Tip - "AWARDS given to market lamb winners!!" - - - If you are a 4-H sheep project member or leader - you might want to read that email. But that email may not arrive in your in-box - even if it was sent or forwarded by your best friend! (Quick quiz - how many "blockers" can you find in that subject line?)

Most marketers (and spammers) have learned to avoid typical spam blocker words. But you may not realize that your legitimate email didn't get through. Some internet providers do not provide a "spam folder" for people to check for blocked or missing emails.

To help keep spam filters from blocking emails you send - don't include punctuation marks or symbols in the subject line.  Also avoid words such as •free  •insurance   •market  •credit
• loan   • opportunity  • amazing  • winner   • prizes

Spam trigger words to avoid*

More Words to Avoid in Email Subject Lines(PDF)*

[Quiz answers: words in ALL CAPITAL letters, the word "award", the word "market", the word "winners" and exclamation marks can each trigger spam filters)
