All workshops should fit into one of these categories and be very student interactive. Workshops will be scheduled for Monday, June 25th, on the Washington State University Pullman campus. Workshop proposal submission is due by February 17, 2012.

Know Your Government Report
Hello, my name is John. I ran as the 4-H Gubernatorial candidate representing Lincoln Co. at the Know Your Government (KYG) Conference in Olympia, WA. Although I did not win, I gained a great deal of wisdom and knowledge. I learned that a great leader not only works with his or her peers, but at times must also hold true to his or her separate and unchanging beliefs. Yes, compromising is what working with a team or group of people is all about, but one must not change their morals to satisfy the people. This is something that I had to learn before moving forward in the election.
I want to share with you all my experience in this election. I was deathly afraid to stand and tell 300 people my view on politics, but thankfully, I had my amazing campaign team coaching me, "John you can do it! Just be yourself!" So what did I do? I got up in front and gave my first speech. Horrible, is the only word that can best describe my first speech. In my head, I was thinking, "thank the lord! I am done, now John just sit back and relax." The delegation voted and the top ten were called up to give a two-minute speech the following morning. You guessed it, I made it in to the top ten. Then I was thinking "What! Did you all not hear my horrible speech? ... Well, guess I get to try again." So I stayed up until three in the morning writing my speech, with my trusty team of course. For my second speech, my team and I thought it would be a good idea to make me feel more at comfortable while speaking. At my school, I can do a pep assembly very naturally, so that's what we did. I got down off of the stage and walked around while giving my speech. It helped me make it to the top 3, which was an incredible accomplishment for me!
To sum up, I learned so very much. I learned to listen to my team (Nina K., Levi R., and Kindsay D.), to conquer my fear of public speaking, and so many other leadership skills. Can you believe that throughout this whole experience, the stress, and the fear, I actually had fun? Well, it's true! And, I met and made many new friends. I can't wait for next year!
(Note: Mandee B., another teen from Lincoln Co., assisted with KYG planning & coordination. Adults who chaperoned or conducted pre-conference learning sessions included Mark Klein, and Marci & Scott Dayton.)
